Buying a car in Sharm does not end with the keys. Understand the sale document, traffic office, address verification, inspections and inter-governorate file transfer, using the author’s experience and published Interior Ministry rules.

The short answer
Purchase and registration in your name are separate checks. A transfer needs accepted ownership, identity and address documents, settled fines and fees, insurance and vehicle verification. Before paying, a foreign buyer should confirm eligibility using their actual residence documents.
An ordinary purchase of a vehicle already registered in Egypt. Import clearance, temporary admission and expatriate-Egyptian schemes are separate procedures.

In July 2023 I described my own Sharm registration: a documented sale, opening a traffic file, police address confirmation, a security interview, fines clearance and final inspection. It took several visits; my final visit lasted roughly two hours. That is a historical case, not an official processing-time promise.
Before buying: check the car and registration eligibility
Match the seller to the current vehicle registration, check the chassis number, expiry, sale authority and any representative’s power. Then show your passport, residence documents and address evidence to the competent traffic office and ask if that specific set is acceptable. This is preparation, not a remote title check.
A local SIM, apartment rental or purchase funds alone do not establish eligibility under every entry status. Another buyer’s success does not settle your case.
Sestruha explains: Check registration eligibility before committing the purchase money.
Keep originals, copies, file references and receipts together. Do not lose the reference used to trace your request.
Documents to prepare
The transfer procedure lists an application, accepted transfer-of-title evidence, identity, residence and applicant authority. It also requires fines clearance, due taxes and fees, amended compulsory insurance and inspection against the vehicle papers. General licensing requirements also mention extinguisher fitness.
Do not equate a power of attorney with completed registration. For representation, the official FAQ requires authority directly from the registered owner with the appropriate signature certification. Confirm copies, photographs and address-proof format for the particular file.

Confirm the competent office and document set, execute an accepted ownership-transfer instrument, apply and retain the file number. Complete requested identity, address and other checks. Settle fines, insurance, taxes and fees, present the vehicle for the required inspection, and obtain the resulting registration and plates where applicable.
Published Article 19 provides 30 days, starting the day after the ownership instrument becomes acceptable under the law, to complete notification and registration transfer. Missing it can invalidate the existing licence. Confirm the relevant start date before signing.
Sestruha explains: The sale, checks and document issue are separate stages. Verify “all done” against the actual papers.
My original post noted extra paperwork and plate handling for some cars from another region. The Interior Ministry FAQ describes vehicle verification and a temporary permit while the previous file is received for an inter-governorate change. Ask who transfers the file, how plates are handled and whether driving is authorized in the interim.
We have no verified universal foreign-buyer total or processing time. Request a vehicle-specific assessment and separate mandatory fees from translator or intermediary charges. The five- and ten-day waits in the 2023 story are not current service standards.
Sestruha explains: Arrange the file and plate procedure before planning an intercity drive.
A power authorizes specified acts, not proof of completed registration. Establish what the representative can do and when the new owner will be recorded.
No universal interpreter requirement was established here. The author managed without one; reliable translation is still important for contracts and instructions. Agree the scope and cost first.
